Textiles (MA)

About

Mohan Zhang is a knit textile designer. She graduated from the Fashion Design at the University of Southampton, and then went on to study Textiles at the Royal College of Art, specialising in knitting design. She excels in using knit structures to record and showcase her observations and understanding of nature, with her works primarily made from natural fibre yarns dyed with plant-based dyes. It was her in-depth study of garment patterns during her undergraduate years that helped her design and create more interesting knit patterns and structures.

The inspiration for her final project, “Dynamic Balance,” comes from a sensitive plant called the Mimosa. This plant closes its leaves when stimulated by external factors and opens them again under normal conditions. In this project, she combines the cyclical process of Mimosa leaves movements with the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang balance, using a unique knitting structure to express her understanding of dynamic equilibrium processes in nature.
