About

Youngsuk Oh’s interdisciplinary work combines sculpture, craft, furniture and interior design to examine the relationship between humans and objects. He is focusing on mental and psychological communication between people and objects. In particular, he is looking for a way to live in the modern era as a human being through consideration of possessiveness and consumerism. Inspired by the monk Beop Jeong(1932-2010) and sociologist Bruce Hood, he believes that possessiveness, a basic human desire, is supporting a modern consumerist society. The simile and metaphors are his main ways of working. For example, in his work ‘Fetichism 1.0’, the Rolex watch represents wealth that we do not yet have, and the rope that ties the watch expresses the relationship between humans and objects. His work ‘The Wine Cellar’ has also symbolized an infinite cycle of possession within consumerism through wine. Youngsuk is trying to combine his experience of designing interior and furniture with his experience in the art field to sublimate it into his own work. Thus, he is pursuing conceptual and industrial art at the same time by communicating with the public through work within the boundaries of contemporary art.

Youngsuk majored in interior design at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. He designed interior and furniture as a designer for the past few years. Youngsuk, who became interested in the relationship between human and object while designing, attended the RCA MA Sculpture to study and investigate more about it.
