About

Catherine Long is an abstract painter with a background in contemporary dance. Her work is engaged with the expression of physicality, gesture and hapticity through the materiality of paint and use of colour. Her paintings are deeply invested in exploring the visceral and psychological impact of colour and working to build layers of history, patina and resonance. Long draws upon her dance background to explore movement and gesture and how the lived experience of inhabiting the body and perceiving sensations from within the body can be used to develop the work to create rhythm, dynamics and sensuality alongside rawness and viscerality. Her paintings are often large-scale creating an immersive experience for the viewer. Prior to the RCA, Long spent two years on the Turps Art Studio Painting Programme (2021-23), completed a PhD in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts (2011-16), and holds an MA (2010), and BA (2006) in Dance from De Montfort University. She has shown work at Matt Carey-Williams, Beaconsfield, The Showroom and Institute of Contemporary Arts, been nominated for the New Blood Emerging Art Prize (2024) and undertaken residencies at Chisenhale Art Place, Siobhan Davies Studios and PADA Studios.
