About

Yining Du is a visual artist from China whose work is deeply inspired by her real-life experiences. Drawing from her identity as an East Asian woman, she uses her personal growth as material, focusing on real social issues from this unique perspective. With a sharp and critical eye, she examines the world, employing in-depth research and precise analysis in the social field to evoke emotional responses in her audience.

Her work begins with personal experiences and expands into an academic exploration of East Asian women’s cultural identity. Yining is particularly interested in the invisible discrimination faced by East Asian women in the UK today and seeks to explore their living conditions within this context. Her art incorporates collage, storytelling, animated film, and sound, inviting the audience on a collaborative journey of reflection through compelling metaphorical narratives and grotesque animation designs.

The centerpiece of this work is an animated short film titled “Meow-bot,” featuring robots with East Asian women’s faces and cat bodies. These robots are scrutinized, monitored, and hunted by monsters from another world. This film aims to delve into the uncomfortable experiences of invisible racism and sexism faced by women with East Asian features in the UK. Through animation, it seeks to convey their dilemmas and unease, stimulating contemplation on issues of racism and female identity.
