About

Wenjun Wang is a contemporary jewellery artist who graduated from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design and accessories and is now studying at the Royal College of Art with a major in jewellery and metal.

Her views and perspectives on the various existences in the world are the inspiration for her work, and she specialises in visually presenting intangible ideas through her understanding, hoping to resonate with the audience in her work.

In the project “Imperfect Skin”, Wenjun hopes to challenge deep-rooted aesthetic prejudices and invisible social pressures in a humorous way. She tries to break down the aesthetic standards under the control of commercial capital and provoke the audience to think about the aesthetic standards under the control of commercial capital.

For example, in her work Acne T-Shirt, she argues that the identity of an object is not absolute. By making wearable skin out of silicone and replacing acne with pearls, she humorously challenges the identity of objects and ponders whether pearls are still beautiful in this context. In this way, she hopes to break down definitions of the identity of objects.

In the vase grouping, She uses silicone to make these different shaped vases to metaphorise the human body, and when the viewer touches the skinned vases in this grouping, he/she will find that they are soft. She believes that the stretch marks and pimples on the skin that do not meet the standard of beauty are like the natural tattoo effect on our bodies, just like the decorative patterns on the vases that represent beauty, leading the viewer to accept the “imperfect” skin.
