Mariana Sanchez Hernandez
About
Mariana is a multidisciplinary artist that works in painting and scenic design for theater, opera and ballet.
Mariana grew up in Mexico and worked as an architect in Mexico City for six years before moving to the U.S.A where she earned an MFA in Scenic Design from the Yale School of Drama, where she received The Donald and Zorca Oenslager Fellowship Award in Design, The Ray Klausen Design Scholarship and The McDougal Scholarship, in addition to the FONCA Artistic Residency Scholarship. Previously, she earned her bachelor’s degree in architecture from the National University of Mexico (UNAM).
She has worked in many theaters around the USA that include: LTC3 Lincoln Center, The Public Theater, The Atlantic Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Miami City Ballet, Portland Opera among many others.
In her paintings, Mariana is interested in exploring open narratives through the ambiguities that live in between representation and abstraction. Her compositions appear through a spontaneous technique that brings to life complex narratives that explore the contradictions and absurdities of human experience.
Through her most used medium — oil on canvas — and sometimes with the help of confectionary tools, she enters into dialogue with art history’s long conversation on the concepts of the media itself, domesticity, taste, motherhood, identity and the feminine.
Mariana completed her MA in Painting in 2024 at The Royal College of Art in London.
