Painting (MA)

About

Ivana Vozelj (b. 1999, Ljubljana) is a London based figurative painter. She graduated with honours with a bachelors degree in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art, University of the Arts London in 2022, before pursuing a year of Painting study at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia in Venice, Italy. She is currently completing her Masters in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2024.
In my practice I explore my own relationship with time, memory, and the haunt of nostalgia, as well as how that might impact a medium like painting; caught in the duality of remaining fundamentally unchanged throughout time yet still continuously evolving. In researching the theory of hauntology, I have recently begun experiementing with materiality of analog film and how that might cannibalise itself within painting.
I mainly draw inspiration from art history, film, literature, and philosophy, particularly the writings of J Derrida, M Fisher, and F Jameson. From there, I seek to evoke tension in my work whilst exploring the absence of presence through a visual language of surrealism.
My work typically follows an introspective narrative of recurring subjects and settings, all representing extensions of my subconscious, looking to blur the lines between truth and myth, diving into false memories of the past whist accompanied by an ever-present observer of the sea.
