About

My name is Tao Wenqi from China and my project is a study of the water management system in the Dar’a River Valley in southern Morocco. The study, entitled “Cooperative Water Management in the Draa Valley”, aims to document and analyse the ways in which local Berber and Arab communities adapt to and resist changing natural conditions and human impacts, especially those influenced by national commercial interests.
An in-depth study of the Daraa River Basin reveals the ways in which local populations adapt and resist in the face of water scarcity, desertification, and conflicting state policies and commercial interests. From the traditional khettara system in the town of Skoura, to the small dams that collect river water in the middle reaches of the river, to the solar-powered irrigation system in M’hamid, each region demonstrates different approaches to water management and survival strategies. While these measures have alleviated water scarcity to some extent, the local population still faces serious challenges with global warming and unequal distribution of water resources.
