Suzi Bratt

Contemporary Art Practice (MA)

About

The work is crystallising.

Congealing from unseen structures, hybrid realities and liminal spaces.

With an interdisciplinary practice that exists in multi-work installation, Suzi Bratt writes, paints, photographs and sculpts her way into speculative futures and psychedelic nostalgias.

Using abstraction, symbols and warped realities she tells stories from her own imagined universe, often referring to contemporary cultural experiences and motifs. She is interested in the function of perception and memory in creating identity, particularly occupied by British identity and societal structure as explored through pop culture phenomena. Her work often touches on ideas of control and agency, questioning who has the power in any given circumstance.

Bratt draws influence from both fiction and non-fiction, from ‘Simulation and Simulacra’ (Baudriallard, J, 1994) and ‘Capitalist Realism’ (Fisher, M, 2009)  to long-form narrative podcasts such as ‘Midst’ (Third Person, 2023) and ‘Welcome to Nightvale’ (Fink, J and Cranor, J, 2012). Her work is greatly influenced by the Pop Surrealism and Abstract Expressionist movements, as well as the recent exhibition ‘In the Offing’ (2023), a group show edited by and featuring Mark Leckey.

Fascinated by fantasy world building and game culture, her ongoing practice haunts the wet sands and decaying glitz of British seaside towns and their arcades. Through these locations, Bratt examines the palimpsest of identities and otherworldly stories that exist between the flashing lights and boardwalk planks.

Bratt currently lives on a narrowboat on London’s canals.
