The independent research project ‘Interact Waves ‘aims to connect tangible and digital media to create a physically interactive learning platform that encourages children (3-11)to engage in real-world activities rather than just touching a screen. I transformed traditional electronic switches into rope-based control mechanisms and designed three types of rope interactions (i.e., three different input devices). Children can control lights, sounds, and movements (nine different output effects) by tying knots, pressing, twisting, and applying different pressures on the ropes. They can freely combine these actions to produce different effects, such as adjusting the brightness, color, and state of the lights, changing the pitch and volume of the audio, and adjusting the speed at which the balloon expands.
Immediate sensory feedback allows children to see the direct impact of their actions, deepening their understanding of abstract concepts and encouraging exploration of the physical world. This approach aims to spark children’s interest in coding and electrical engineering while exploring new methods of machine interaction and user interfaces.
