About

kaitian cong (b.2001) is a London-based artist who’s work grounded in material aesthetic and play with diverse mediums such as knit, print, wood and metal. She graduated from BA Textiles in Central Saint Martins.

Cong is interested in highlighting everyday objects that are usually overlooked and exploring our relationships with them—how we think about objects, how we define them, how we experience them, and how we are shaped by them.

She believes this approach is integral to her work, as it translates objects into her visual language, often documented through zines. Ultimately, Cong aims to communicate her ways of seeing though the sculpture she made, to highlighting and revealing unexpected meanings within the objects and to shift our perspective to new ways of seeing, understanding and perceiving.

“one is never enough” It explores our relationship with everyday objects.

Cong’s practice revolves around everyday objects. She draws inspiration from objects in our daily life and wants to reinterpret the vitality of these objects – perhaps a new possibility that can break away from the constraints of reality. She hopes that through her interpretation, objects can get rid of people’s preconceived definitions of them,

In her practice, she perceives these objects through placement, and placement is also a kind of respond, turning exploration and perception into a more intuitive vision. In this category, objects and their definitions begin to become flexible. They are no longer framed by definitions, but can be freely combined and moved like a game.

She uses textile as her language to approach the materials, such as wood and metal. The textile background let her approach them in a soft way, and the textiles she makes try to break away from the underlying impression of textiles – soft and fragile. Her textiles show more of a hard texture like wood and metal. Through this confrontation of materials, she seeks harmony and balance to make the two elements coexist.
