Viki WEN
About
I am Viki Wen, a multimedia artist and visual designer exploring the connections between people and urban spaces through mediums such as sound, performance, video, and installations. My work has been exhibited in both London and Hong Kong, showcasing my commitment to creating immersive, multi-sensory experiences that encourage audiences to reflect on and re-examine their relationship with their environment.
My research focuses on exploring identity through urban soundscapes. The motivation for this research stems from a profound interest in the sensory dimensions of urban life and a desire to uncover the often-overlooked auditory aspects of identity construction. Growing up in a bustling city, I have always been fascinated by the myriad sounds that define urban environments—the hum of traffic, the chatter of people, the rhythmic pulse of industrial activity, and the subtle whispers of nature interwoven with the city’s noise. These sounds not only shape our daily experiences but also resonate deeply within our sense of self and community.
In my artistic practice, I have consistently explored themes of vulnerability, memory, and connection, using sound as a primary medium. Projects like “Echoes of Fragility (2024)” and “HearHere(2024)” have demonstrated the powerful role of sound in conveying emotional and societal narratives. Through these works, I have witnessed how sound can evoke profound responses, bridging personal and communal experiences.
The impetus to focus my research on urban soundscapes and identity arises from a desire to expand the dialogue between sound art and social research. I aim to explore how different sounds in the urban environment contribute to the construction and perception of identity, both individually and collectively. By engaging with diverse urban soundscapes and creating sound art installations, I seek to reveal the hidden layers of meaning embedded in the sounds of our cities and to foster a deeper appreciation for the auditory dimensions of urban life.
My research is driven by a commitment to illuminate the intricate ways in which sound shapes who we are and how we relate to the world around us. Through the convergence of theoretical inquiry and artistic exploration, I hope to contribute to a richer understanding of the symbiotic relationship between sound, space, and identity.
