About

Kairui Fang is a menswear designer and observer from China. His experiences of moving between different cities and cultures have cultivated his unique, meticulous, and micro-level design perspective. In his fluid journey, he continually explores and seeks the subjectivity of his identity.Kairui explores the fragility and anonymity of masculinity through his designs, adept at using tailoring and materials to give his pieces a unique artistic expression.

This work is about Kairui’s life experiences and Camus’ novel “The Stranger.” By capturing the fleeting traces left during movement to find his subjective identity in the context of fluidity. This is a process of self-discovery; these stains and creases are poetic narratives and evidence of his movement.

“By using delicate and easily traceable materials such as silk, sheer organza, and chiffon, my work captures transient marks that symbolize a fluid identity. I have developed techniques to permanently preserve these traces, including printing the marks from my travel bag onto silk and cotton-linen fabrics. Additionally, I cut tiny gaps in canvas and leather, connecting them with zippers and sheer fabric to retain the creases formed by carried items. By layering prints of sweat stains, rainwater, and floor dirt on soft, transparent fabrics over canvas, my designs exhibit a delicate and transparent beauty while preserving these ephemeral traces. These methods allow the traces to serve as poetic narratives and evidence of mobility, expressing my unique identity.”
