Tong Niu
About
Tong is a sound artist and deep-listening researcher who delves into the latent sonic language within natural ecology. Her work integrates moving images, experiential design, and cybernetic-psychedelic aesthetics to transform sound waves into polyphonic expressions. During her time at the RCA, she investigated how virtual spaces and real consciousness shape experiences and reveal suppressed voices. By utilising spectral ethnography, Tong uncovers the therapeutic potential of sonic narration, connecting inner worlds to their environments.
Her immersive soundscapes evoke hidden emotions and memories, foregrounding marginalised cultures and ephemeral collective memories. Each work involves field recordings that capture a state of hyper-perception, transforming wandering sounds into rhythmic “bells,” resonant carriers interwoven with ambient spatial journeys. Through dynamic sonic dialogues, her work fosters psychological and emotional healing, reconnecting individuals with their environment, historical heritage, and natural realms.
