About

Yuqing Gao is a 3D designer currently based in London, whose practice focuses on mobile wearables, 3D printing, and moving images.

Her recent research focuses on patients with awake bruxism, aiming to monitor and treat this condition from a design perspective. Since stress is a cause of awake bruxism symptoms in patients, she has designed a wearable olfactory concept device based on aromatherapy—MOG (Mobile Garden). This device monitors the tension frequency of the jaw muscles using electrical muscle sensors and triggers an ultrasonic nebuliser to release scents based on biometric data (e.g., releasing the scent of lavender or orange when the jaw muscles contract continuously for 2 seconds). The concept device is intended for daily use by patients with awake bruxism. It is wireless, lightweight, and features an ear-hook design for ease of wear. This project aims to help patients improve their mood from a psychological perspective and gradually reduce the frequency of bruxism by timely releasing scents based on the monitored state of the user’s jaw muscles.

Her project integrates technology and natural therapies, focusing on mental health and personalised medicine to improve the quality of life, demonstrating the importance of innovative design in modern health management.
