Architecture (MA)

About

Julia is an architectural designer based in London with an MA in Architecture. Her interests lie in historical continuity, repurposing materials, and community engagement within architecture.

The first-year project at the Royal College of Art examined the ceremonial and communal roles of ancient Nuraghe structures in Sardinia. By exploring how traditional materials can be reinterpreted in a modern context and reflecting on the evolving nature of these archaeological sites, the architectural proposal aimed to foster new connections, integrate both new and old traditions, and complement existing practices within the landscape.

The final year project, Reimagining Long Acre Street, uses Long Acre Street, an arterial road branching from Covent Garden, as a blueprint to transform parts of London to embody the functional characteristics of European piazzas and town squares. The urban project responds to the mono-culture of tourism by introducing scaffold follies – structures focused purely on appearance and experience. Designed to evoke speculation and intrigue, these follies draw inspiration from the concept of ruins to introduce ambiguity and fascination. The principle extends to the material itself and its form; a traditionally utilitarian material re-imagined with new significance and value. By redefining scaffolding in the form of classical order – something theatrical and symmetrical – the project transforms a mundane construction material into an emblem of aesthetic value.

Julia previously studied at Central Saint Martins and gained professional experience at Vanessa Cayatte Interiors.
