About

Matteo Bozzi’s practice spans film, performance, sculpture, and photography, focusing on human relational dynamics and the interaction between bodies and space. His works create immersive experiences that challenge conventional perceptions of communal living and spatial engagement.

In “Why Can’t We Live Together?“, a collaboration with Claudio La Mattina, Matteo examines the complexities of coexistence. Set against the backdrop of Naples, Italy, this project uses a participatory approach inspired by Bourriaud’s Relational Aesthetics. Through a sensory language derived from the Neapolitan Smorfia, Matteo and Claudio craft ambiguous cardboard sculptures that invite viewers to rethink their relationship with space and each other. The project culminates in a short film that extends this narrative, using mobile scenery and visual metaphors to explore the concept of conviviality and the inherent contradictions of communal living.

In “Elementary Gardens,” Matteo explores the garden as a metaphor for introspection and spatial practice. He designs mobile, performative devices using materials such as wool, acoustic foil, bubble wrap, and rubber. These insulating, skin-like structures mediate the body’s experience in space, creating sensory environments that encourage participation and redefine relational dynamics. Inspired by the etymology of “garden” as an enclosure, Matteo’s creations act as thresholds between openness and closure, self and other.

Both projects underscore Matteo’s interest in ephemeral architectures and performative art. His use of materials and participatory methods transforms everyday objects into relational sculptures that enhance viewer engagement and collective experience. Whether in a gallery or a public space, Matteo’s works challenge audiences to reconsider their interactions with space and each other.
