– PROJECT BRIEF –

The research site of Divining Pollinators is located in the north-eastern part of Crete, in southern Greece, and the project is based on the analysis of the pollination system of Crete and the problematic trends that have arisen in it, creating new myths about the pollination system with reference to real ecological problems that have already taken place, linking the geographic site to the mythological story using a physical model with a deck of character cards from the story.

The term myth mainly expresses a way of narrative and communication rather than a fiction, which can also be understood as an ancient scientific approach .

By incorporating characters from some of the ancient Greek myths, this project creates a link between modern science and the understanding of nature as it was understood in the historical period, as well as providing a rich storytelling background for the characters in the new myths.

The aim is to revisit the new relationships and changes between elements of the pollination system in order to construct a more inclusive state of pollination, emphasising the new changes that are taking place in these seemingly marginalised roles in life. and how a variety of natural and human-induced actions are directly or indirectly affecting the region’s pollination systems.

Divining Pollinators project attempts to serve as a medium for dialogue between myth, ecology, and art by bringing in the perspectives of bees, plants, wind (climate) to review the relationships between elements of the pollination system in the region’s historical, present, and future scenarios, which merge the past present with visions of the future, drawing on historical myths, humanities, and ecological sciences, and offering a novel perspective on redefining the relationship between time, place, and ecology.

Exploring the relationship between the pollination circle and the physical world we live in from these three time periods, trying to examine how we connect with and understand the pollination system，and to what extent changes in these relationships and the addition of new characters now affect the original pollination chain, and re-examining the relationship between the climate, the plants, the bees, the new characters in a new light.

Jiayu Dai ‘s works mainly explores the relationship between ecological nature and individual life, and is dedicated to the study of the intrinsic connection and influencing factors of environment and landscape. Her projects are mostly in the form of installations, interactions and spaces, exploring and reflecting on the relationship between space, people, nature and other elements.

At the same time, she also has a certain foundation in spatial design, and is keen on exploring the relationship between time, space and human senses and emotions in space, and has always maintained her love for spatial and interactive design.
