About

“Into the desert, revive the desert, live and let live.”

I focus on the climate crisis in the Moroccan Sahara, especially desertification and water scarcity. I was fascinated by the traditional Khettara system, which is not only the source of life in the Skoura region, but also the continuation of desert life. This great construction project supports local agriculture and daily life by bringing precious groundwater to the oasis through underground tunnels.

To improve the microclimate of the Khettara system, I designed 45 experimental schemes using local materials such as stone, rammed earth, branches and fabric. These programmes are divided into three zones based on the characteristics of Khettara wells at different altitudes, creating unique environments adapted to different cultures, people and lifestyles. By injecting new vigour, I hope to revitalise the Khettara system in the age of desertification.

“Obsessively searching for the desert’s treasures.”

My project not only addresses specific issues in the Skoura region, but also provides inspiration and lessons for other arid regions. I am from China, and the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang is also challenged by water scarcity. Local people are using similar methods to access water. Through my project, I show how ancient wisdom can be combined with modern technology to address these environmental challenges. I strongly believe that this work has great potential and can make an important contribution to the well-being of humanity.

“Humanity will be better off, even in the desert.”
