Environmental Architecture (MA)

About

My name is Ziying Lin and I am an environmental architect based in London.

I work on the relationship between desert ecosystems and people. During my undergraduate studies, my main research focus is on the Taklamakan Desert in China, how to maximise the utilisation of desert resources and create a good ecological cycle through a half-treatment, half-use approach. Research will focus on climate change mitigation, social equity, community resilience and emergency management.

During my time at the Royal College of Art, I continued to delve deeper into desert environments, with research turning to the world’s largest desert, the Sahara Desert. The research focussed on the environmental and social impacts of nuclear testing. Through the use of drawing and mapping practices as a medium for documenting, questioning and interrogating these realities, and ultimately collating them into a compilation and translation into multiple languages for dissemination.

Reveals the hidden consequences of nuclear testing in desert climates, making information accessible to both local and global communities and helping to bring justice to those affected by nuclear testing. The often-overlooked consequences of nuclear testing on natural and human communities are illustrated, advocating for transparency, environmental justice and recognition of the rights and histories of affected communities.
