About
I am Fang, with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and experience in interior decoration design. During my work, I began to question: What is design? Why design? To address these questions fundamentally, I returned to school for further exploration.
At school, my first project was to restore a chair. Initially, I aimed to express my design desires through exaggerated forms, but I later realized that a chair is fundamentally a chair, serving the purpose of providing rest. While chairs can take various forms, whether it is necessary to assign excessive meaning is worth contemplating.
The next project was the ” Parasitic Museum,” a repurposing project for an old factory. I started from the factory’s original structure, making minimal modifications and deepening the design by breaking the original structural grid with a circle. Through exploration, research, and functional analysis, I eventually created a new tunnel shape embedded within the old structure. The tunnel symbolizes new light and life, while the factory represents old darkness and death. Integrating the tunnel into the building revitalizes it, much like a parasite thriving by utilizing its host, hence the name ” Parasitic Museum.”
Design is a continuous exploration that not only answers the questions of “what” and “why” but also continually inspires new thoughts and ideas. Through design, I have gradually understood that truly valuable design is not only about transforming the material world but also about responding to and reflecting on human existence. Although the answers may never be entirely clear, through exploration, I have found my own design language and direction, aiming to create public spaces that combine sculpture and architecture with poetic and meaningful qualities. Design is a dynamic and ever-evolving process that drives us to move forward, seeking new answers and possibilities.
