Anju Marie Kasturiraj

Arts & Humanities (MPhil/PhD)

About

Anju Marie is a performance artist, experimental writer, and essayist at the RCA School of Arts & Humanities. The PhD project Amorphous Devotion spans live art, text, and video as sites of performance. Anju’s research intersects performance studies and philosophy, to examine ritual as a producer of contemporary sexualities and national identity. They incorporate elements of endurance art into their performance practice, as an exploration of the relationship between devotion and subjugation, alongside questions surrounding poetic language as a tool for subversion, bodily memory, and stratifications of the sacred and the profane.

Anju is a 2024 member of The Jarman Lab at Birkbeck University. Other ongoing projects include their autofiction series, a series of long-form texts first generated through surrealist automatist methodologies and then manually assembled on a letterpress. These text pieces detail the artist’s experiences with South Indian and Catholic rituals intercut with contemporary prose about the violent politics of desire.

Previous work includes contributions to the 2024 book Transect of Coexistence by NAHR; the documentary films Healing Together and Memories of Yesterday commissioned by Royal Museums Greenwich and Greenwich Docklands International Festival;  live-art installations at venues including Camden People’s Theatre, UglyDuck, Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Beaconsfield Gallery, and The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
