Zhiye Zhang
About
Living and working between the UK and China, Zhiye’s work draws profound influence from East Asian feminism, mythology, and diverse ethnographies. Zhiye continuously explores the intrinsic connections between nature, clay, elements, and humanity.
Through the research and documentation of minority myths, Zhiye deeply values clay’s role in the creation myths of China and beyond. As a cross-cultural heritage, clay preserves shifts in gender power dynamics and geopolitics. Field research remains an indispensable part of Zhiye’s creative process.
In Zhiye’s practice, mythical animals are employed as symbolic vessels. Through porcelain percussion and image metaphors, Zhiye reconstructs scenes from myths and the history of gender power in East Asia. Utilizing gas kiln reduction, Zhiye encapsulates organic matter within its intrinsic container. Zhiye’s practice also encompasses 3D clay printing and glass casting. The serendipitous moments where mythology intersects with nature serve as profound sources of inspiration. By transforming and deconstructing temporal moments with material, Zhiye aims to draw attention to the contemporary influence of nature and mythological origins.
