Dominique Cro
About
Dominique Cro is a new media artist living and working in London. Cro utilises the concept of time travel to observe phenomena that continue to change the course of humankind, such as digitisation and capitalism. The lens in which she approaches these themes is influenced by Donna Haraway’s theory – the Chthulucene, which poses making-with instead of self-making, and centres interspecies collaboration with the hope of creating a more habitable future. Cro works in CGI animation, video, installation, sculpture, game design and photography. Her practice combines documentary of the current socio-ecological environment with speculative fiction. She applies worldbuilding as a tool to explore alternative realities, with a focus on more-than-human perspectives.
Cro’s recent works centre mutualistic symbiotic relationships. For example she is currently developing a video game, which explores the mutually beneficial relationship between termites and Termitomyces fungus. The game has an accompanying installation, which was exhibited as part of the RCA 2024 Contemporary Art Practice degree show. Using digital objects first modelled in 3D software, Cro recreated these works as physical sculptures, by hand carving polystyrene and casting Jesmonite. Cro is interested in cross-pollinating digital technology with real-world, material objects. For example, over the past year Cro has been creating custom frames for screens. Video can often be interpreted as a 2D medium, but Cro aims to reimagine this medium within a 3D, sculptural setting.
Cro has recently completed an MA in Contemporary Art Practice at Royal College of Art. Recent exhibitions include Tate Modern Lates, Future Archaeologies at Camden Art Centre, CAP Cinema at Genesis Cinema, Futures Past at arebyte Gallery, Orbit at Ridley Road Market Bar and Correspondance at The Photographers’ Gallery. Cro has also recently been the recipient of the Developing your Creative Practice fund from Arts Council and was commissioned by Ridley Road Market Bar for their Orbit: Digital Winter Series.
