Gima Anthony Karikari

Contemporary Art Practice (MA)

About

Gima Anthony Karikari, a Ghanaian-Italian artist based in London, has transitioned from a background in Art Direction to a primary focus on sculpting in his artistic practice. Raised in Italy after being born in Ghana, he has made London his home since 2013.

Having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Direction for Fashion from the London College of Fashion (UAL) and currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art, Gima’s artistic portfolio includes moving images, photography, space design, painting and sculpture.

Drawing inspiration from architecture, Gima predominantly utilises building materials in his artwork to explore memories. He sees his sculptures as archives that capture and preserve stories, while also serving as a means to uncover and delve into buried memories.

Thematically, Gima’s work extensively delves into his West African heritage, exploring oral traditions, folklore, and the mystical dimensions of his roots. Through deep engagement with symbolism and the interpretation of proverbs like the Adinkra symbols, he intricately integrates these culturally rich elements into his artistic narratives.
