Contemporary Art Practice (MA)

About

Joelle Hazzouri (2001) is a Lebanese artist based in London and a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art. Their practice explores the preservation of their hometown, Minyara, through a queer lens. They focus on the act of reinterpreting objects and narratives that have been subjected to a long history of injustices.

Their work is rooted in documenting the essence of Minyara, particularly as the town begins to fade away. They are interested in what remains untold and how alternative perspectives can find a place within this cultural landscape. Through their work, they explore how different perspectives can infiltrate cultural spaces and narratives solely through existence, challenging traditional perceptions and allowing them to reimagine the town’s stories and symbols.

In their practice, they work with materials such as clay, fabric, and metal, which are integral to representing generational practices and the spaces they contemplate. These materials reflect the fragility and resilience of cultural connections, especially in contexts that have often been excluded from the conversation.

A significant aspect of their work addresses the present nature of societal norms, particularly around women’s choices and voices. In a repressed environment where autonomy over one’s perception is limited; they aim to highlight the power dynamics of information and the impact of lived experiences of judgment. By introducing another perspective or voice, their work is interested in creating new narratives and understandings within these spaces.

The work questions and aims to disrupt established norms, offering a space for reflection and encouraging a broader dialogue about identity, heritage, and the complexities of cultural preservation.
