Rodrigues Goncalves

Contemporary Art Practice (MA)

About

Rodrigues Goncalves is a contemporary artist renowned for his unique blend of satire and the absurd, creating dialogues that blur the boundaries between life and absurdity. Seamlessly merging the mundane with the extraordinary, the tragic with the humorous and juxtaposing the sacred and the profane.

Goncalves’s work is deeply rooted in fine art-making traditions, it boldly incorporates ancient, religious, and everyday items and iconography that engages with the complexities of cultural history. A dialogue aimed at the masses challenging conventional perceptions and boundaries with the use of elements of celebration, surprise, irony, and existential dread.

Born in Madeira Island, Portugal in 2000, Goncalves was exposed from a young age to his family-run souvenir shop. He earned a BA (Hons) in Glass and Ceramics from the University of Sunderland, and an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Arts. His journey in radical thinking was further enriched by a mentorship with the British architect Mike Davies CBE [ designer of Pompidou Centre, Paris, France and Lloyd’s Building, London, UK].

In 2021 Goncalves received the Glass Prize Artist award [Warm Glass, UK] and in 2023 was awarded the People’s Choice UK New Artist of the Year 2022 Award [Saatchi Gallery, London, UK].
