Charles Lyu
About
Charles Lyu is a curator deeply committed to placing the audience at the centre of exhibitions, driven by a passion for crafting experiences that guide them through a journey of artistic discovery. His approach is grounded in a rich and diverse background that extends beyond the traditional boundaries of the art world. Charles has cultivated a multidisciplinary perspective through his education and professional experiences. He holds an M.A. in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art and a B.A. in Contemporary China Studies, with a double minor in Cultural Management and Curation, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
In addition to his academic background, Charles has gained significant professional experience in art institutions and public relations, including Christie’s, Gallery Weekend Beijing, and the Palace Museum Beijing. These varied experiences have provided him with unique insights that he skillfully applies to enhance guest experiences, creating immersive and engaging environments that go beyond mere observation.
Throughout his career, Charles has consistently implemented innovative curatorial practices. His recent projects, such as Penombra at the Royal College of Art, Beyond and Within the Void at Fitzrovia Gallery, and Belong and Belonging at Eaton Hotel, reflect his commitment to interaction and engagement. Whether transforming traditional gallery spaces into collaborative works of art through audience participation or designing imaginative space journeys within unconventional settings, his work blurs the lines between artist, curator, and audience, fostering an art exploration that is truly centered on those who experience it.
Looking ahead, Charles is driven by a vision to further redefine the interactive dynamics within exhibition spaces, ensuring that the audience’s experience remains central to his curatorial process. His mission is to guide audiences on a journey that sparks curiosity, encourages engagement, and transforms the way they connect with art.
