Curating Contemporary Art (MA)

About

Carmen, an experienced designer and curator who has lived and studied in New York, Beijing, and London, focuses her curatorial interests on the forefront of digital art technology. She explores how these innovations can be seamlessly integrated into exhibitions to provide new narrative methods and viewing experiences. Carmen aims to break the boundaries of traditional exhibitions by creating immersive, interactive, and multi-sensory experiences that showcase the intersection of technology and art.

Carmen has a history of pioneering curatorial projects. In 2021, she participated in the Jingdezhen International Ceramic Biennale, where she expanded the material medium of ceramics by incorporating media technology. This approach facilitated deeper understanding, recording, and expression, blending ceramics with video, digital technology, and music to create novel interpretations and engagements.

From 2022 to 2023, Carmen contributed to the design and curation of the Moutai Offline Experience Museum in Beijing. She curated the audience experience, crafted emotional maps of visitors within the space, and devised interactive activities using digital technology. These efforts ensured each visitor experienced a deeply engaging and personalised journey. Carmen’s work prompted her to explore the limits of digital technology and its integration into physical spaces, proposing multi-sensory interactive experiences that engage visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile senses. These experiences aim to create lasting memories and deepen engagement with art.

Carmen’s approach is defined by her commitment to merging cutting-edge technology with traditional art forms, resulting in exhibitions that captivate audiences and provide fresh perspectives on art. She strives to present and integrate digital technology in ways that are embraced by both the art community and the public, thereby enhancing the accessibility and impact of art.
