Sunjoo Jung
About
Spending her childhood in Busan’s Chinatown inspired Jung to study migration as a mode of cultural production and political expression. She focuses on how the body transcends borders, particularly the discursive interplay between the East and the West. Her research is now expanding to encompass a range of practices arising from cultural and generational conflicts within migrant communities across Asia. Through her curatorial practices, she aims to bring these obscured narratives back into the public eye.
To deepen her understanding of intergenerational history and identity, she worked on the curatorial teams of the Busan Biennale 2022 and the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, following in the footsteps of artists who have moved across the globe to continue their artistic endeavors. Since moving to London, she has focused on exploring the fluidity of identity in the contemporary diaspora. She is also keen to research the ‘afterlife’ of exhibitions through public programms and mediations beyond its temporarity. She believes the social impact of exhibitions outlasts their physical presence, just as the culture of migrants transcends geographic boundaries.
In addition to her graduate project Bodies of Knowledge, she curated The Wind from The East at the Tower Gallery of Eton College and co-curated William Blake and Conflict Beyond Borders and Forms, the Museum Lates programme in partnership with the Fitzwilliam Museum. Since 2022, she has participated as a Curator of Art Accent, the Emerging Artists programme hosted by Art Busan. This year, in collaboration with Danny Leyland, Billy Crosby, and Margaret Liang from RCA, she has broadened the programme beyond local talent to global.
Alongside curatorial projects, she obtained a master’s degree in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in London. Prior to RCA, she studied Visual Arts at Ewha Womans University (MA, Seoul) and Journalism and Communication at Peking University (BA, Beijing).
