Yeneul Kim
About
Yeneul Kim is a curator and researcher who explores immersive exhibitions as experiences in both physical and mental spaces.
As a curator, she deeply contemplates her role as a bridge within a specific space between artists and visitors. She believes that the first impression of an exhibition is shaped by the space itself, and thus the nature of this first impression determines whether visitors will engage more deeply with the exhibition. The relationship between these spaces, along with their dual role as venues for artistic expression and visitor exploration, necessitates a curatorial approach that is acutely sensitive to the narrative potential of the environment. Visitors primarily describe their reasons for attending exhibition spaces as voluntary leisure activities, where the enjoyment they seek signifies more than mere entertainment, and learning encompasses the acquisition and enjoyment of knowledge beyond mere amusement. In this regard, she focuses on how to provide an exhibition that allows visitors to engage voluntarily and comfortably, without being overly challenging or excessively simplistic. In other words, she aims to investigate how to discuss space while simultaneously exploring how visitors can appreciate and engage with the ‘aesthetic experience’ advocated by John Dewey.
She has concentrated on methodological approaches that facilitate visitors’ enjoyment and immersion in exhibitions. Through this contemplation, she has developed her thinking about exhibition spaces, placing greater emphasis on the experience provided to visitors by integrating artworks with the space through installation.
