Yuying Chan

Curating Contemporary Art (MA)

About

Yu Ying (Yuying) Chan is a contemporary art curator and researcher with a background in visual art. Her curatorial practice centres around fictive curation, integrating fictional narratives into the exhibition process. This approach is not only about presenting artworks but also about crafting experiences that engage audiences in a more prominent position.

Yuying’s interest in fictive curation began with an observation made during her exploration of London galleries: there is an increasing demand for immersive exhibitions in the contemporary art scene. This shift is caused by the idea of prioritizing audience engagement and enhances people’s understanding of the art. She believes fictive curation is the method for achieving this goal. By pushing boundaries and exploring new ways of understanding reality, fiction in curation serves as a tool to critique and reflect on real-world issues. It allows envisioning the future while learning about the present and acts as a form of resistance against imposed truths and realities. A fictive curation can offer alternatives to dominant narratives, enabling critique of established norms. It involves creating speculative scenarios and blending reality with imagination to push boundaries and explore new ways of understanding reality. It can take the form of avant-garde museology, world-building techniques, science fiction explorations, or pastiche and parody. Through fictive curation, Yuying aims to create exhibitions that invite audiences to reflect on the current and explore alternative perspectives.

Her curatorial pursuits revolve around themes of cultural representation, nomadology, otherness, and temporality, approached through a metaphysical and fictional lens. Growing up in various countries and experiencing multiple cultures has fuelled her interest in cultural representation and belonging. Committed to the power of fictive curation, Yuying is excited to continue developing innovative curational narrative methodologies and discovering new ways to apply fictive curation.
