History of Design (MA)

About

Driven by my fascination with bridal wear, I transitioned from a dynamic career as a sportswear designer to pursue a Master’s Degree in the History of Design. My interest lies in the symbolic significance of the wedding attire, which embodies rich cultural symbolism and deep emotional resonance.

This year, my research focused on the transformation of the wedding dress from a symbol of cultural tradition to one of conspicuous consumption in contemporary North America. In my dissertation, I explored Kleinfeld Bridal, an iconic American bridal retail empire in New York City. By observing Kleinfeld’s evolution from an ordinary wedding dress retailer to a provider of an elite bridal experience, I illuminated the intricate interplay between tradition, identity, and consumerism that shapes the modern idea of the white wedding—a symbol of Western cultures.

Central to my study are themes such as the commodification of the wedding industry, the evolution of the American dream, and a society driven by a constant desire for self-representation through material goods and authenticity in 21st century USA.

As I stand at the threshold of a new chapter in my career, combining my expertise as both a fashion designer and a design historian specialising in bridal fashion, I am confident that the historical insights and knowledge gained from this year’s research will form a strong foundation for my future career journey. This understanding will enhance my work both conceptually and technically, advancing me as a creator in the bridal fashion industry.
