Isabella Tranter-Richards

History of Design (MA)

About

I am Isabella, I got an MA in design history, so I can work as a dress historian with museums and dress collections. During my time at the RCA I also contributed to a student zine. I worked with the RCA BLK to write exhibitions reviews and interview artists.

My practice revolves around historical dress and how fashion has been used as a form of resistance against a dominant culture. In the past, I have written about how Palestinians and the Windrush fashioned identity, upon coming to Britain. I especially want to interrogate dress as the very female tradition that it has become in many cultures. Examine how preservation in culture is often directly tied to clothing and thus how women are tied to it as well.

I hope to continue my work and research how those without any power, use clothing to resist.
