Philippa Bogle

History of Design (MA)

About

I am a multi-disciplinary creative with wide-ranging professional experience and an aptitude for both creative and visual, as well as academic practice. A former footwear designer, I chose to study for a Masters in History of Design at The Victoria and Albert Museum and Royal College of Art in order to pursue my passion for Art and Design History, with the aim of becoming a curator and museum professional.

I am passionate about cultural engagement and interpreting history and culture for wide and diverse audiences. I am also interested in preserving unique spaces with intangible atmospheres, telling untold stories and providing audiences with immersive, transporting historical experiences.

My research interests include colour, textiles, footwear, dress and fashion, women’s art and craft in the early to mid-twentieth century, artists’ houses, Bloomsbury and, most recently, the material culture of the suffrage movement. My dissertation focuses on the Suffrage Banners predominantly in the LSE Women’s Library. Utilising my experience as a designer and maker, I have examined the materiality of the suffrage banners including their design, colours, materials and construction, as well as considering the sense of solidarity and political identity that collective making of suffrage banners may have fostered.
