Dongyu Li

Jewellery & Metal (MA)

About

Dongyu Li, born in 1997, is a Chinese interdisciplinary product designer, installation artist, digital artist, and jewellery designer. His journey has inspired his studies in Jewellery & Metal, where he explores the connections between human cognition, daily behaviors, and art. His work aims to create pieces that evoke personal memories and cultural narratives, enhancing viewer engagement.

With nearly three years of experience in the fragrance department of ZARA HOME in China, he led a small team in product development. This role sharpened his design sensibilities and sparked his interest in metalworking. This curiosity led him to study Jewellery & Metal at the Royal College of Art, where he refined his skills and expanded his artistic horizons.

Initially, his art practice involved creating large wearable installations addressing social phenomena. At the Royal College of Art, he focused on craft techniques, using jewellery-making tools like saw blades in his work. This experience highlighted the importance of craftsmanship and the narratives within everyday objects.

He is fascinated by the cultural and historical contexts of tools, utensils, and tableware. He aims to create works that blend traditional techniques with contemporary concepts, producing innovative and thought-provoking art.
