About

Nicole Congyan Liu (b. 2000) is a Multi-Disciplinary Artist and Designer. Her works are always presented as large-scale installations, fashion artefacts, and metal accessories.

Her creations have always been committed to reflecting the stereotypes and prejudices of a particular social ideology. People’s identities are given, challenged and misunderstood. These personal experiences inspire and reflect her artistic practice.

She majored in industrial product design in her Bachelor’s degree, so that she has a habit of making things or objects into a big or huge scale. It is fair to say that she has mastered 3D modeling in her undergraduate years. So this year she was trying to avoid this kind of skill that she is good at. So Nicole basically made everything by her own hands. And she thoroughly enjoyed it.

The theme of the project, REBELLION, stems from the monopolization, patriarchy and hierarchy that she feels from the outside world, whether from the social system or the cultural level. This brings her an inner sense of brokenness, fragility, vulnerability and also rebellion.

At the same time, she has been exploring which material would be perfect to express this theme. Throughout this year, she did a lot of material experiments from synthesized materials to a variety of different types of metals.

For her project, finally, she chose aluminium, leather and UV resin as the main materials, which are extremely visual and well suited to the theme.
