Elizabeth Rhona
About
Elizabeth Rhona (b.1999) is an artist based in London.
She received a BA in Fine Art from Staffordshire University (2022) and studied for her MA in Painting at The Royal College of Art (2024).
Elizabeth Rhona’s work focuses on the imagery of metamorphosis. In particular, creating hybrid beings of flora and flesh which are influenced by Grotesque Art. The main elements of Grotesque Art which Elizabeth incorporates into her practice are; symmetry, ornamentation and transformation. For example in her paintings she transforms female figures into beings of Moresque scenes using repeated curved motifs inspired by classical Flora elements in Grotesque Art; this motif aims to link nature and flesh, representing life and decay.
Elizabeth’s work also explores the changing nature of women and how they were perceived throughout history, reclaiming a contemporary view of the feminine body and women’s sexuality.
“I aim to create more amorphous forms, something curious, I will take inspiration from original elements in Grotesque Art to reinvent metamorphosis imagery into something surreal.”- Elizabeth Rhona. (2024)
