Nicole Poh
About
Nicole Poh, b. 2000, Hong Kong, is an artist and recently graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, University of Arts London studying Fine Art: Painting BA Hons (2023). She continues her practice at the Royal College of Art on the Painting MA course (2023-24).
Nicole Poh’s work captures the displacement of existing communities through paintings that explore themes of personal reminiscence, community identity, and the transience of the urban landscape. The artist blurs the lines between the present and the past, creating a leap into the past—a rip in space and time. Despite the city’s rapid urbanisation, numerous ruins endure, characterised by mixed cultural architecture. The artist delves into the implications of the materials used in these buildings, their impact on society, the consequences of discontinuing their use, and methods for their retention or preservation. Seeking to preserve the artistic impact of this unique history, the artist’s work explores architecture and space, sometimes in an absurd manner. The artist’s works evoke visceral emotions and offer a unique perspective on the urban landscape, reflecting her personal experiences of displacement and cultural heritage, establishing a profound connection with viewers.
