About

Scarlett Budden (b.1998, London) is a figurative oil painter.

Budden’s work looks to challenge the tensions between the female inner voice and the historical and social dialogues that frame the value and objectification of the female form. Each painting investigates the notion of spectatorship and the voyeuristic tendencies of the digital and cinematic lens. The woman is edited, magnified, and cropped to deceive and alienate its audience. In its abjection and provocative nature, the female body projects power. It is dismantled to protect its autonomy and to refuse the objective gaze. Through these ambiguous facades and arched portals, the observed becomes also the observer. Ultimately, the work focuses on control and the understanding of who in the conversation is truly in possession of it. It is the power dynamic between sitter, artist, and audience that is under scrutiny.
