Yang Fan 杨帆
About
Yang Fan (b. 2000) is an artist from Shanghai, China. She graduated with a BA from Central Saint Martins in 2023 and is currently pursuing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art.
Combining traditional forms with contemporary technological contexts, Yang’s artistic practice explores the relationship between virtuality and reality. Her interest lies in the collective unconscious beneath the surface of the physical world, and she believes that images existing on the internet have a quality similar to death. In her paintings, Yang conveys the sense of derealisation present in everyday life through a subjective technique. Additionally, the metaphorical portrayal of animals is a significant part of her artistic language.
Yang’s work delves into the darker aspects of cute culture, using the capybara as a central motif. Cute culture often creates an illusion of escapism. Memes deconstruct negative emotions such as pain, anger, and depression in a harmless way. By employing inverted colours, Yang reflects on the duality of visibility and invisibility, challenging traditional perceptions of truth.
