Yi Liu’s practice is profoundly influenced by traditional Chinese mythology and legendary, endeavouring to interrogate and elucidate the principles of liberty, multiplicity, and inclusivity, as well as the manifold intricacies and complexities inherent within the individual psyche. Marked by an intrinsic ambiguity and fluidity, Liu’s artistic endeavours contest and blur the demarcations between species and dismantle conventional gender paradigms, thereby engendering an expansion and reconstitution of established boundaries.
The corpus of Yi Liu’s work synthesizes lyrical colour with the classical delineations characteristic of fresco techniques, further augmented by the artist’s innovative brushwork methodologies. This amalgamation is achieved through the employment of diverse media, culminating in a visually nebulous aesthetic. This aesthetic serves as a metaphorical conduit for exploring themes of love and freedom and reflects deeply on the relations between power structures and social norms.
