About

Amy Sarr is a Senegalese artist specialized in analog photography. She focuses on cultural identity, the ambiguity that can arise while studying it, and how the former and latter affect and come into play within social and personal experiences, with a particular interest in disseminating her native culture.

Growing up between Africa, North America and Europe, she interrogates themes that have affected her throughout her life such as collective memory, gender roles, the female experience, migration, tradition, diaspora and cultural exchange. Through documentary, vernacular and performative photography, she plays with light, color, texture and reflections to highlight neglected details, from an emotional approach to purely aesthetic research.

With a decolonial aim, she uses ambiguity and juxtapositions to challenge unilateral views by bringing viewers closer to cultural richness, specificities and complexities.

Her latest projects include “So long a life“, a look into a Senegalese woman’s coming of age, “Ma la raw“, a love story bound by societal pressure, and ‘By Myself“, photographic prints onto fabric inspired by the West African tradition of using textile backdrops in portraiture. She also published her first photo book, Seeking Solitude, which  was released at Tate Modern during Offprint 2024.
