About

Lindsey Macadie is a visual artist and photographer from Scotland who now resides in London. Before studying at the Royal College of Art, she was a teacher and commercial photographer. Her undergraduate degree was in fashion where she received a BSc with Honours (First Class). Having worked for fourteen years in both the public and private sectors of education, specialising in working with children with specific learning difficulties, she has a strong interest in society and how we operate within it. It is this that shapes her interests, thought processes and her practice.

The lure of anonymity that a large city offers is appealing to her – the desire to be able to be oneself within this urban environment is palpable. When having conversations with strangers on the street about their experiences of judgement, she observed a need for anonymity and the fear associated with not having it.  She started to imagine ways that she could represent the subtleties of our differences without the need for a face or a name.

Using text in the form of quotes alongside photography, she permeates thoughts, belongings and hidden spaces in an attempt for her to connect with others and to see things from a different point of view. She purposefully slows down her creative processes using analogue methods of letterpress, film photography and more traditional means of communication.

Her practice has a performative aspect combined with an element of chance which offers an unknown outcome. By leaving quotes on public transport, she relinquishing control and invites participation in the form of an anonymous exchange. She is now beginning to place herself or her belongings in the image, capturing the scene before her with the environment and objects undisturbed.
