About

MAKIKO is an award-winning, international visual artist, based in UK and France. Since 2006 her work has been exhibited globally. Her practice focused on mental health and socio-economic issues. A diverse image-maker that understands the power of the medium in various forms, she is best known for black and white photography. She published three books – “Beautifully Different” (2014); its Japanese version 自閉症スペクトラム(2016); and “BATTLESHIP ISLAND” (Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2018), which was shortlisted for Best Published Photobook, 7th Singapore International Photography Festival. Both are in Tate Library (Martin Parr Collection). She is a recent mentee of Magnum Photos.

Her time with RCA brought her practice to a different level. She produced short films, mixed media work tutored by Peter Kennard. Her exhibiting project at RCA 2024, ヒステリー [Hysteria] became a finalist for Carte Blanche of Paris Photo. The KYUGORO book, which was part of the project, focusing on her great great uncle who emigrated to the United States, was nominated for two international photobook awards.

While she continues to develop her photography practice further, she embarks on a new chapter to build a design and research practice.

She studied at Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, London Business School, International Center of Photography and Christie’s.
