Siyan Liu
About
Liu Siyan was born in 1999. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography from the University of the Arts London and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Photography at the Royal College of Art.
A young artist and freelance photographer, she currently lives and works in China. Influenced by Freudian psychology and her early experiences, her work primarily explores marginal cultures, with themes including ruins, cross-dressing, and individuals suffering from depression. As an ordinary individual growing up in a vast world, she also focuses on the philosophical aspects of life’s dilemmas, exploring the relationship between the objective and the subjective. Her visual language emphasizes authenticity, nostalgia, and calmness. In these works, there is often a sense of powerlessness and resilience, aiming to evoke empathy in the audience. Subsequently, her practice has shifted towards experimental video and intimate relationships.
The project “Blinded” combines immersive experiences and experimental imagery to explore the origins of love in the process of getting to know and understand each other. It reveals that love is largely based on individuals’ imagination of the other person.
