About

Haoran Liu is a contemporary artist who explores individual identity and sense of belonging in a diverse society. In my life, I often move to new cities or even countries for my identity and work. This wandering life has aroused my strong need for a sense of belonging. My works explore the relationship between personal memory, social role and psychological state, showing the spiritual rootlessness and sense of alienation that modern people often experience. My creation focuses on the multiple roles played by individuals in different social spaces. This role transition and adaptation often leads to a psychological sense of non-belonging. Through artistic practice, I try to build a “safe house” to provide myself and the audience with a sense of belonging and comfort.

In my work “Diary” (2023), I record the traces of my behavior in the daily life space, and through the patchwork of these traces, I create a three-dimensional personality image. This work not only reveals my own personality traits and behavioral habits, but also reflects my life trajectory under the influence of different emotions. The work conveys my profound exploration of self-cognition and psychological state through the details of daily life.

Another work “Non-Place” (2024) was inspired by a dream of mine. He dreamed that he returned to his mother’s womb, was wrapped in warm and soft liquid, and experienced a clear sense of boundaries and security. This experience has become a symbol of security in my artistic creation, expressing my pursuit of spiritual belonging. Through the expression of this dream experience, I explored what is the real sense of security and belonging.

My artwork is full of deep thinking about myself and the environment. Combining personal memories and emotional experiences, I try to find inner peace and belonging in the rootless modern society. My artistic practice is not only a search for self-identity, but also a response to the emotional dilemma that is prevalent among contemporary people.
