Matias Oficialdegui – “SMOF”
About
As a creative mind and multidisciplinary artist, my practice was born to express myself by questioning and reinterpreting those ideas established by society over the years.
Throughout time, fashion and trends have influenced what is considered “right” and “wrong”. However, variations have often emerged, leading to new conceptual and aesthetic implications and creating new realities. The world we live in is filled with both consistencies and contradictions, and to me, movements that oppose and offer alternatives are equally significant. As a result, my practice as an artist strives to collaboratively present and showcase both of these aspects.
I believe that beauty can be found everywhere. For some, it is rubbish, for others it is treasure. For some it is chaos, for others it is order. Human nature creates and destroys at the same time.
As a “trash artist”, I transform materials that would otherwise deteriorate and damage the environment. By renewing these materials I give them significance and create aesthetically pleasing creations, which inspire viewers to contemplate our way of life, consumption patterns, and our relationship with the planet.
Through the medium of contemporary printing, my work emerges from the Dadaist concept of Marcel Duchamp, which materialized in Ready-Made pieces, as well as the repetition and mass production in the work of Andy Warhol with his “Pop Art” prints. It also includes the reinterpretation and redesign of products, for example Virgil Abloh’s high fashion brand Off-White, as well as many other artistic and human references.
We must take care of our planet by responsibly reducing our consumption. We must increase our re-use. Why not transform rubbish that would otherwise pollute the world and turn it into beautiful new things that are full of life.
