Tyrone Vera is a Gibraltarian artist currently living and studying in London. Tyrone was born in Gibraltar, and then moved to Plymouth, UK to study for his degree in 3D Design Crafts. Upon graduating with a First Class Honors, Vera moved to London to continue his studies by undertaking a Masters in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art.

Vera’s work is deeply rooted in the spirit of play. Always captivated by the uninhibited creativity and boundless imagination that play evokes, Vera strives to capture this intrinsic joy and curiosity in his expansive practice.

His artistic practice involves a dynamic interplay of colours, geometry, and textures, reminiscent of the spontaneity and experimentation found in play. He combines traditional techniques, such as investment casting, with innovative methods like 3D printing and rendering. Inspired by the theory of loose parts, he incorporates elements that can be moved, combined, redesigned, and taken apart, allowing his installations and whimsical sculptures to become participatory and encourage hands-on, physical experiences. His interactive body of work, ‘Plork,’ features modular components that visitors can reimagine, fostering creativity and engagement.

In his recent project Touchsthetics he worked within the remit of the curatorial prohibition, Do Not Touch, and enticed the audience to go beyond sight by transgressing and breaking social norms in the formal gallery environment. In a world increasingly dominated by flat screens and virtual experiences, this work invited contemplation on the value of touch and served as a reminder of its profound role in learning through playfulness and exploration.

Vera’s works engage with concepts of education, joy, and the freedom of imagination. For Vera, play serves as a metaphor for larger life experiences and emotions, offering a lens to view the complexities of the human condition with lightness and possibility. He aspires to create spaces where the constraints of adulthood give way to the boundless possibilities of a child’s imagination.
