Story of Stories (2024)

1920 x 1080, 04:07.

-Synopsis

A self exploration poem animation on doodling in childhood, wandering in the translation, and leaping to the future.

This film celebrates the insignificant sparkles of thoughts, presenting the generous power of narrative also as a manifestation of my own. By using the hand-drawn crayon animation to showcase this transiting from the dots to figures to words, I achieved the growth of my realisation towards unfamiliar language and foreign places.

Lines crossed, I’m documenting this journey of continuous change through our past and future.

-Context——Bloodline, Airline, Storyline.

The original concept was from my relationship with my writer mother. Even thoughI was fortunate to grow in a family full of stories, I felt like lost my own word under her epic narratives. I was looking for chances to communicate across the distance, balancing our voices into a harmony tune, building up our shared languages together.

I began to explore the true purpose of storytelling. Influenced by Le Guin’s Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction,I realised the storytelling is travelling and delivering. it’s a desire of extending, and the joy of giving. This piece of animation captured these passions, allowing the storylines to grow and evolve continuously.

-Production——Draw the lines.

I rediscovered and re-examined my childhood doodles, using them to structure the growth of the drawing into the main storyline: from dots and lines to characters, languages, emotions, and environments, leading to an endless extension and transformation of lines.

I used handmade mix color crayons to clean up the printed rough animation and shot the final film with Dragonframe.
